School Bullying and Abuse

School bullying and abuse takes place every day. Bullying can become violent and abusive. Abuse can be physical, emotional or sexual. This aggressive behavior–which may be physical, verbal, or social–may occur in person or online.

Bullying is considered to be a significant problem in schools. National estimates indicate that more than a quarter of middle and high school students are bullied at school each year. This aggressive behavior has long-term harmful effects. In addition to the risk of physical injury, research shows that victims of bullying are at risk for:

suicidal behavior

physical health problems

low academic achievement

Any young person can be bullied, but certain groups are more likely to be victimized, such as students with physical and mental disabilities and LGBT youth.

When your child is in school, the school is responsible for keeping them safe from harm and abuse. The school should create a safe learning environment, identify pupils who are suffering or at risk of harm and take suitable action. Everyone in the education service plays a part in keeping children and young people safe.  Your child’s school should have measures in place to ensure that pupils are safeguarded from abuse.  These measures include training designated teachers for child protection and vetting of all staff.

Schools have a responsibility to protect their students when they know or should know that a student was subjected to bullying or abuse. If a school did not take action to stop bullying, legal action should be explored.  Similarly, if a student is sexually or physically abused by another student or teacher and the school did not take action to prevent the abuse, legal action should be explored.
