Taxotere

Taxotere is marketed by Sanofi-Aventis and was initially approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996 to treat breast cancer. Its approved indications have since grown to include head and neck cancer, gastric cancer, prostate cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. While Taxotere has been in wide use for more than two decades, it wasn’t until December 2015 that its U.S. label was updated to note that cases of permanent alopecia had been reported among patients treated with the medication.

Hair loss is among the most common side effects of chemotherapy. However, Taxotere is more likely to result in permanent alopecia compared to equally effective alternative chemotherapy agents. Sanofi-Aventis has long advised physicians, patients, and regulatory agencies in the European Union and Canada that treatment with Taxotere may increase a patient’s risk of permanent hair loss, while the U.S. labeling merely stated that “hair generally grows back” following treatment.

One study that analyzed the effects of Taxotere found that up to 9.2% of women treated with the drug experienced permanent hair loss. Although hair loss is very common with many chemotherapy agents used to treat breast cancer, permanent hair loss should not occur. Alternative chemotherapy agents used to treat breast cancer do not carry this risk, and Sanofi-Aventis did not warn about it in the United States.

The physical and emotional pain that women with breast cancer endure throughout their cancer treatment is severe on its own. Adding the emotional trauma of permanent hair loss resulting from Taxotere use can be devastating. If you were treated with Taxotere and suffered permanent hair loss, please call us. We may be able to help.
